An appeal to Whitesburg Baptist Church about Starbucks coffee
I went to the ROC today (September 30) to have lunch with my wife and kids. As you walk into the Café area there is a sign that reads "We Proudly Brew Starbucks Coffee." I guess I was a little surprised to see this. I had heard sometime back that WBC may be getting a coffee shop and would be using Starbucks coffee. I then heard that the idea of the coffee shop was still a go (and learned that it definitely is a go based on Sunday night's presentation and literature), but the idea of using Starbucks had been scratched.
I have heard about Starbucks supporting the homosexual movement and other non-Christian organizations. I did a little research this afternoon and was quite astounded to find some of the things I found. For instance:
Starbucks is listed as a company on the Planned Parenthood website that generously match employee donations to them – http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ppcw/files/ColumbiaWillamette/Matching_gift_companies.pdf
Starbucks has participated in Gay Pride events; however, I'm not sure they still do – http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/230034_gaypridebusiness25.html
Starbucks recently ran a campaign to promote conversation. One of the quotes on the cups was from a gay man who stated he regrets waiting so long to "come out of the closet." – http://www.bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=21387
Recently Starbucks came out with a new logo that depicts a mermaid with no clothes and her legs spread open – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/09/starbucks-labeled-slutbuc_n_101058.html
I am sure there are more examples out there, but they are not really needed. I would ask that you and the rest of those responsible for making such decisions take another look at promoting and selling Starbucks brand coffee. Selling a brand of coffee, or anything for that matter, that supports and condones such activity is unacceptable, especially for a Baptist Church. There are plenty of other coffee companies out there, some of which, I'm sure, do not promote such agendas.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to your response.
