Sock.jpg

A sock, or sockpuppet, is an account on any system other than one's primary account. The term is general to the wiki community. Any secondary account may be considered a sock; if a person distributes his edits equally among two or more accounts, all of them may be considered socks.

Socks may be operated for good and valid reasons; however, most socks are considered malicious or, at best, mischevious. A user of a system acquires, over time, a reputation. This reputation is essential to the integrity of the community as a whole. Thus, establishing a secondary account in order to escape one's primary reputation is a threat to the community.

You may have a good reason to establish a sock. One way to demonstrate good faith is to disclose your primary account on the user page of your sock. Editing via sock in order to create the appearance of more support for a position that actually exists; or to evade a block on your account -- these are examples of poor conduct. Operating a sock under these conditions may result in both your primary account and all your socks being blocked.
