Using the US Social Survey database, test the following hypotheses. Be sure to write out the null and alternative hypotheses. Check the level of measurement for each variable and decide what appropriate statistical test to apply.

Is there an association between respondents who report they are happy (variable happy) and who report life is exciting (variable life)?

(THIS IS A CROSSTABS TEST)

Yes, there is an association – chi squared (p test < .05)

Is there an association between gender and the variables happy and life?

There is no association = since the p value < 0.5

Do men have occupations with higher prestige (variable prestg80) than women?

This is an independent samples T-test. This is because the data is divided into two independent groups. You can't be both male & femal

Xm = Prestg80 for men Xf = Prestg80 for females

Ho: Xm <= Xf (note this is males are smaller than or equal to females) H1: Xm > Xf

  • P-value (this is Sig (2-tailed) - NOT Significance) is less than .05, you reject null and accept the alternative.
    • NOTE: WE MUST DIVIDE THIS NUMBERR BY 2 SINCE IT IS A ONE TAILED TEST

Is there a difference in the education levels of the respondents’ parents (use the variables maeduc and paeduc)?
