The thirteen Deathlords are powerful despots, ruling the Underworld using a variety of styles ranging from Machiavellian manipulation to iron-handed military dictatorships. They are unmatched in power by any creature in the Underworld and by very few in Creation and Heaven.

Their worst enemies are, of course, their fellows, but so far they have thus far managed to maintain a peaceful accord with one another. This peace is balanced by the threat of terrible violence - as the Deathlord who makes an overt move agains another is likely to face the united ire of the other eleven as well.

Following the Usurpation some of the higher souls of the dead First Age Solars remained in the Underworld as ghosts. These were approached by some of Neverborn who offered them tremendous and horrible power in return for their names and service. At first, only ten accepted, becomming the first Deathlords; however, in the centuries since then, the number has grown to thirteen.

The Deathlords were recognized as beings of immense power by the denizens of Stygia and the Underworld. At first they seemed uninterested in domination - instead they worked to learn all they could about their new world. In the process of seeking out the ghosts of shades and the great libraries of the Underworld they earned the reputation of being academicians and knowledge-seekers. In time, though, they laid siege to Stygia, only then making the truth of their power and ambition be known. By then they had become so powerful that the current balance of power in the Underworld was clear to all there.

Stygia was declared their joint domain after an extended war with The First and Forsaken Lion who had been the first to move on the city. Finally, they set themselves up as a council of rulers over the city, keeping the traditional Dual Monarchs as figureheads. Each Deathlord maintains their own citadel in the city - so that their presence is always felt there even if they themselves are not present.
