File Upload Instructions

From BluWiki

Uploading files is a bit tricky on Bluwiki, because they assume that the file you upload is a picture and thus if you are uploading anything except a picture, it is not too intuitive. In any case, click the "Upload file" link on the left-hand side of the page, and upload the file. Depending on the size of the file, you may be issued a warning that the file is too large for a typical picture. Disregard this and continue saving the file. Be sure to remember what the "Destination Filename" is, because that is the name you will use when creating the link to the file on the page.

Now edit the page where you wish to place the link and use the following code:
[[Media:name_of_file_here.doc|link text here]]
.

File Types

Only certain kinds of file types may be uploaded on Bluwiki. It is recommended that study notes be uploaded in Microsoft Word document format, because it is standard and ubiquitous.

  • Allowed file types:
    • Microsoft Word (.doc)
    • Adobe PDF (.pdf)
  • Disallowed file types:
    • ZIP (.zip)

Frequently Updated Files

For courses that are ongoing, it may be desirable to upload study notes many different times throughout the term. In this case, the link code given above should not be used -- instead, use this:
[[:Image:name_of_file_here.doc|link text here]]
After this code you may wish to make a note indicating when the file was last updated. You can do this by using 4 tilde's, which will cause Bluwiki to replace the tilde's with your username and a date/time stamp:
~~~~
With frequently updated files, it is best to continually over-write the same file instead of having many different copies. To do this, just click on the link for the file which you wish to update, and then "Upload a new version of this file". Bluwiki will automatically make sure for you that the "Destination Filename" field on the Upload File page is the same. If you do this, BluWiki's engine will actually save all the previous versions of the file for you, so in fact there is no data being lost.
