GCSE English/Explorers or boys messing about

From BluWiki

Explorers, or boys messing about? Either way, taxpayers gets rescue bill

(Back to GCSE English)

How the article is unsympathetic with the two men

  • use of quotes to question the team's wisdom "editor of Jane's Helicopter... 'I'm surprised they use the R44'"
  • use of word "pick", implying "picking" up the two men like you would pick up naughty children
  • use of sarcasm - "in their 'trusty helicopter'"
  • use of pun - Mr. Smith (from the article) is "also known as Q", a character from James Bond
    • James Bond reference does make the men appear to be overgrown children pretending to be an adventurer
  • Writer undercuts their experience by saying that they have been wrong in the past
  • Their flying ability is brought into question when the author writes that the flying conditions had been "excellent"
  • Use of "experts" to criticise the men
