Governance in Singapore

From BluWiki

Book written by Ross Worthington and published in 2002. Governance in Singapore focuses on what he calls the 'core executive'. While his theoretical observations deserve merit, his research has serious problems. For example he lists Wang Gungwu, the present head of the East Asian Institute, as a member of this core group. However, Wang Gungwu is neither a Singaporean citizen nor does he play any role in politics. The book is no longer in print due to the threat of libel suit against the author and publisher Routledge/Curzon.

Amazon review

This book, based on extensive original research, including in-depth interviews with public sector officials and employees of government-linked companies, provides a great deal of detailed information and analysis about the peculiarities of the elitist and highly controlled system of governance, and about how the elite conducts and controls policy. Using the concept of the core executive, this study uses empirical analyses to critically examine the role of the executive, legislature, judiciary, the public sector, the military and the governing party in managing the Singporean state, the wealthiest nation per capita in the world. This book is the first substantial empirical study of governance in Singapore since the 1970s and focuses on contemporary Singapore 1990-1998.
