International Travel with Gowalla

These tips are from Elizabeth Hayes.

1) Check your data plan

For US players, contact AT&T for a data plan (1-916-843-4685) They offer data plans of various sizes, depending upon usage. I was able to do a lot in the UK on a 100MB/month plan, using the following tips.

2) Mind your MBs

Under 'settings' on your phone, go to 'general', 'network', and turn off 'enable 3G' and 'data roaming' between spots. This prevents excessive usage (including accidentally tapping Twitter and email, which are real MB busters)

Avoid over-use of the tilt feature in the spots list ~ the big map uses more MB than the small one.

You can track usage by going to 'settings', 'general', usage', and adding together the 'sent' and 'received' info under 'cellular network data'. Reset stats before setting out.

There is also the 'MyWireless' app from AT&T, which gives a fairly up to date estimate of data usage.

3) Invest in an external battery for the IPhone.

I have used both the Tekkeon and Mophie versions with good success. This will give you extra get up and Gowalla, especially when travelling in areas where a car charger or regular charger are not available. Remember to carry a charger so you can recharge while dining out or having coffee.

4) Spot Creation

Create spots with a short description, then pick up info and create longer descriptions at the computer.
