History of Ganutell

History

The word Ganutell and its variants, is a corruption of the Italian word �cannutiglio� which relates to the thin hollow coiled metal wire used in making these flowers. This �cannutiglio� acted as the frame work for creating and shaping the flower petals and both flowers as well as rich embroidery were made in this way.

In earlier years, during the 18th and 19th century, this beautiful craft was practiced only by nuns living in convents and monasteries who created wonderful artisan work using gold and silver wire, threads and cloth to create decorative items to be displayed in their local churches.

Since then this wonderful craft was nearly forgotten until quite recently when a new revival occurred and together with the earlier techniques, new techniques and designs are being adopted to create not only decorative items but also to produce wedding bouquets, tiara�s and souvenirs/favours.
