The Western Road runs predominantly east-west for about 500 miles along the coastline of Elbereth Sound from Orussus to Gotian, passing through Grenton, Allimon and Ravensdale among other settlements. About halfway between Gotian and Ravensdale, the road runs close to the apex of a large bay of Elbereth Sound.

Here, it is said (by admittedly unreliable sources), a colony of merfolk were once to be found who would encourage travelers to spend the night feasting and drinking with them, but in the morning would demand exorbitant payment for their hospitality; indeed, they were perhaps the first merfolk highwaymen, as they had discovered, or been taught, the usefulness of the wheel, and were able to move about from beach to road on small trolleys or carts of driftwood construction.
