Stellar Journeys/Cetacean Sleeping

From BluWiki

Cetaceans are aquatic air breathers and their breathing is completely controlled by their conscious brain. Because of this they have evolved an unusual sleeping system. Half their brain sleeps while the other stays awake to control breathing. This four (4) point advantage simulates this.

Build

This is a variation on Doesn't Sleep (page 50, 20 points) with the following limiters.

  • Still requires eight hours sleep, divided between the two halves of the brain which remain conscious when the other half sleeps; -60%
  • Temporary Disadvantage: Confusion at 12; -10%
  • Temporary Disadvantage: Indecisive at 12; -10%)

Effects

When a cetacean is sleeping they respond poorly to excessive stimulation. As long as they are able to just move along, breathe when they need to and get their sleep they are fine sticking to the course of action they decided to follow before starting their sleeping cycle. If something new comes up they must make a self control roll in order to decide what new actions to take, until this succeeds they just keep trying to do the same thing despite the changed situation. Once that succeeds they then must make another self control roll in order to act upon it, if this fails they must take the Do Nothing action.
