Becoming a director

  • Most directors start of as actors and find that they have the ability to coordinate a show and work well with others.
  • Many directors receive training at colleges and universities that offer specific training programs in that field
  • Directors, like actors, must often times work for free or for very little money in order to make a living in their chosen profession

The Auteur Director

�is involved with many aspects of a play or film. This may include:

  • Writing
  • Producing
  • Designing
  • Construction
  • Choreography
  • Performing

Auteur Directors often tell the story from their own point of view rather than the writer�s and will often times alter the text to serve their own purpose.

The Director�s Job

  • Examine the text, study it, and understand it as much as possible before they start the production. Find out what motivates the play.
  • Develop a directorial concept.
  • Hire a design crew (sometimes).
  • Hold auditions and cast the actors.
  • Hold production meetings with the designers and crew.
  • Begin rehearsing.

  • Help create stage business when necessary
  • Create stage pictures
  • Have line rehearsals
  • Full run through

Producer

  • Handles all the money making
  • Is usually in charge of everyone including the director
  • Makes money off the show if it is successful

Nonprofit Theatre

  • Board of directors
  • Artistic director
  • Managing director
