The Grid 2: Reporting problems

What to do when you find a problem with the beta of The Grid 2.

Bugs and design features

First thing: is it a bug or a problem with the way the program is designed?

Design features

These are problems due to the way the program has been designed � e.g. �I can�t find out how to print my sentence� or �I want to predict words from a word list�. If you have suggestions for improving the design, please forward these to me by email (or call me to discuss them).

Bugs

These are when the program goes wrong. This is really important � I want to fix every bug that we find, and in order to be able to fix the bugs I need to be able to reproduce them.

When you find a bug:

1. Write down what happened. Did a button do the wrong thing, or did a command not work � or did the program crash?
2. Try to make it happen again. Click on the button again, or do the same sequence of operations to reproduce the problem. Write down the method for reproducing the problem.
3. Try to avoid the problem. Now see if there is a way to work around it � does it work as long as you do something else first?
4. Get the log file. If the program has crashed, there will be a file in the Grid 2 folder with error information. Please copy this file somewhere else (it will get replaced next time you run The Grid 2).
5. Send it all to me. Send me all this information and I�ll take it from there. If there are other relevant files, attach those too.

Example

1. I changed the background of my grid �fishy� to a picture of a fish. When I exited edit mode the program crashed. Every time I try to jump to �fishy� it crashes�.
2. I can�t jump to the �fishy� grid, but other grids work ok.
3. I can open the grid in edit mode, and change the background picture to avoid the problem.
4. The log file from after the crash, the folder for the grid �fishy� and the picture of a fish are attached.
