Theories of learning

THEORIES OF LEARNING

There a variety of theories of learning. The main groups of theories are below.

  • the behaviourist approach - learning is a change in behaviour as a result of a person's interaction with a stimulus.
  • the cognitive approach - learning is an active thinking process of learners as they organise, store and integrate new knowledge with existing ideas.
  • the humanistic approach - learning is a personal act to fufill potential
  • the social/situational approach - learning occurs in relationships between the learner and other people and with the environment.
