Beginning in fourth season Dawson's Creek, Unfastened depicts a Hellmouth opening under the school. Besides from the Hellmouth, the only other changes are that the history teacher is still teaching, and that Abbie Morgan is alive. With no one prepared to deal with this new menace, the town seems doomed. However, eventually the school learns how to deal with vampires and certain other demons. They are trying to prepare for a larger menace. Will they be prepared to deal with and apocolypse?

The Hellmouth may have closed, but the demons and magic unleashed by it remain, and even more vampires are gathering with the post-Abbie power vacuum. The Protector Squad must also deal with their grief over Dawson's, Bessie's, Grams's and Doug's deaths, and the menance of VampDawson. As the season continues the Principal's intrigue and manipulation continues, while Drue challenges Pacey for control of the Protectors with his own ultimate agenda. Another major theme is Andie's continued magical and psychological struggles, with increased power accompanying increased instability. Meanwhile the Protector Squad struggles week after week to eliminate various demons and monsters, while minimizing the death count.
In episode six a FBI team arrives to investigate the town, with Agent Lensen soon proving to have her own agenda. While the government conducts an official inquiry into all the deaths since Chaos Unleashed, Lensen seeks to play the Principal and the Protectors against each other.
Everyone has their own agenda, and though the main danger seems to have passed hell still waits to consume everyone.
