Wiki Page Editing Tips
From BluWiki
Be sure and register with bluwiki and make a named and passworded account. If you are already a Wiki Contributer listed
on the first page please use the exact user name already given for your account name. The idea here is that everyone can see who is making changes in this way, if you do not register and make changes your IP address will be
recorded instead of an account username, making it more difficult to readily discern who made changes or additions.
When updating a picture on the Wiki just click on the picture, and go to close to the bottom
of the Wiki page showing the file info and click the link "Upload a new version of this file".
Browse to the new version of the file (it does not matter what the name of the file you
upload is on disk, but be sure to not change the "Destination filename" text. After updating a picture
on the Wiki you will need to refresh the browser page prior to being able to see the new
version of the picture uploaded.
- To generate the creation of a Wiki page, a link is first made on the front of the Wiki (Main Page):
- Log onto bluwiki using your username and password you registered with and go to the Wiki "Main Page".
- Pick a spot to add your page, such as under Features or Fun and pick the link to add it under.
- Click the pencil on paper upper right Edit.
- Find the link you chose to add your Wiki page under and copy that line of text, and paste it.
- Edit the second lower down copy (the link you pasted) and change the text of the linked page and the displayed text (separated by a vertical bar "|") to your desired page text. Remember that the first part (before the vertical bar) will become part of the actual URL or internet address, so don't use any punctuation or non-text. The second part (after the vertical bar) can have any characters you like, it will be the text that is displayed for the link.
- Click the "Save page" button. This will bring up a box to verify you are not a bot (automated software) trying to spam Wiki edits. Enter the displayed weird text you see into the box and press the Enter key. Repeat as needed until you succeed.
- Check your results, if there's a problem repeat the Editing process.
- Click the new link you created on the Main Page to open an edit session on your new Wiki Page.
- When a Wiki page is made from a forum thread(s) there is a healthy amount of editing and corrections that occur.
- The plain text is copied from the thread(s) to the Wiki page.
- The Wiki Page is now formatted with headings, bold, italics, and links using Wiki Text (Wiki Markup).
- Do some rearranging to get things well organized into sections.
- Any pertinent info is added that can be.
- Any spelling errors, typos, and bad grammar are corrected.
- A link to the original poster (the "contributer") as a WIki user is added at the bottom.
- Finally, a link back to the "Main Page" is added to the bottom.
- It's important to use the headings Wiki text code so that an automatic table of contents is generated with hotlinks to all the sections. This is a number of matching equal signs to either side of the heading... such as "== Weapons ==" and "=== Ship Weapons ===" where the number of equal signs indicates the level of heading. The largest heading font and outer "level" is used for the fewer equal signs, in the above example, "Weapons" would appear in a larger font than "Ship Weapons" and "Ship Weapons" would be a sub-section of "Weapons" (in the table of contents this would be shown as "1. Weapons" followed by "1.1 Ship Weapons" below it).
- Use the "*" and "#" in the first column to generate indented lists. The asterisk "*" will generate indented lists with a dot at the left of each entry. The pound sign "#" will generate numbered lists with a number at the left of each entry. Similar to the heading level formatting, the number of successive asterisks or pound signs determines sub-level. For example a "# First Duty" followed by "## First Duty :: Part One" will generated an indented list of "1. First Duty" with the indented sub-section "1. First Duty :: Part One". It is important to note that you must not use the "enter key" at the end of lines on indented list entries, but let the text wrap-around feature carry it onto the next line instead, as a "return" at the end of the line will terminate that indented list item.
- Bolding is matching three apostrophe before and after bolded text such as
This Is Bold
- Italicized text is two matching apostrophe before and after italicized text such as
This is Italics
- Five apostrophe before and after text will result in bold and italicized text.
- To make a link to the contributer the Wiki text is
Name
where "Name" is the Wiki user name of the person. - To make a link to the Wiki front page the Wiki text is
Return to Main Page
- To make a link to an URL or internet location the Wiki text is
[URL Title-Text]
where the "URL" is an internet location such as "http://batgrotto.com" and the "Title-Text" is the text to display as the link shown to the user such as "Go To Sons of Captain Kirk :: Official Site". - To show a picture (image) on the Wiki page use the Wiki text

where "Uploadedfilename" is the "destintion file" specified when the image is uploaded. Click the Toolbox column "Upload File" link to upload a file to the Wiki.
Wiki pages use special codes to signify columns, font details, headings, and more. Use the following reference to learn more about these codes: Wiki Markup.
