Government of Small Island Nation

From BluWiki

The Government of The Small Island Nation is composed of two branches: the Legislative Branch and the Exectutive Branch. Formally, the government of The Small Island Nation set forth in the Constitution of the Small Island Nation, which took over from the Charter of the Small Island Nation Colonization Society upon settlement of the inhabited islands. While these two branches are supposedly equal, the Legislative branch has hijacked much of the government, leaving the President little more than a figurehead.

The Executive Branch

The head of the Executive Branch of the Government of Small Island Nation is the President. The President is elected by direct popular vote by the people upon the passage of an Act of Election by Parliament.

The President resides in the State Palace, a compound containing the Presidential Manor and the main offices of the Government, as well as those agencies of the government assigned to the Capital City.

The powers of the President extend only so far as approving the passage of laws by affixing his signature upon the bill, publishing writs, appointing and dismissing the Cabinet and other civil service heads, and performing ceremonial functions, such as receiving the credentials of envoys, attending summits, cutting ribbons, having parties, and embodying the qualities a SIN citizen should have.

The President may publish Writs, which are in effect laws, which may only be invalidated: by a law of parliament, or because the subject of the writ is constitutionally reserved for Parliament.

The Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch of the Government of Small Island Nation is the Parliament. The powers of Parliament are wide-ranging, consisting of the power to "make all laws neccessary for the governance and safety of Small Island Nation and its citizens, so long as they do not detract from the Life, Liberty, and/or Property of any citizen (or, without due cause, resident alien)."

Parliament is composed of two differnt types of members: Cabinet Members, and Elected Members. Cabinet Members are appointed to the Parliament by the President, and also function as the heads of governmental departments. Cabinet members include the Prime Minister, the Minister of Homeland Defense, the Minister of the Treasury, the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Transportation, and the Minister of Ecology. Elected Members are elected by the people upon the issue of a Writ of Election by the President. The nominal size of the Parliament is 31 members: 25 elected, and 6 cabinet. However, the President has not issued a Writ of Election, and so the vacant seats have yet to be filled.

The head of Parliament is the Prime Minister. He has the power to call and adjourn meetings of Parliament, as is fitting his technical role as the representitive in Parliament of the President. He/She is also the secretary and presiding officer of the Parliament.

The Judicial Branch

The Small Island Nation lacks a judicial branch of government. Courts are organized on the local level.
